Organization

The host institution of IEB is the University of Chile, Santiago where the largest number of IEB scientists are located. However, as a network, administratively, IEB functions as a non-profit Private Corporation under Chilean Law. The Corporation "Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity" (IEB) has regular members and a board of directors and is required to report annually to the Chilean Ministry of Justice. As a non-profit private corporation, IEB is obliged to have its own administrative staff and accountants, and may manage funds and donations from Chilean and foreign sources.

The eight Associate Investigators and two Directors of IEB are the founders and permanent members of IEB. Adjunct and Young Scientists are hired for stipulated periods. In addition to its scientific staff, IEB presently counts with Professional Scientists involved in coordinating graduate studies, report preparation, scientific citation studies, publication of books for the general public and some research as time allows. IEBs four regional Outreach Coordinators are located permanently in La Serena, Santiago, Chiloé and the Magallanes area. These coordinators, in addition to organizing environmental workshops and other outreach activities for IEB, are charged with undertaking fund raising to boost this important program.

Academic matters and decisions regarding budgeting in IEB are overseen by an Academic Council comprised of the Associate Investigators, Director and Deputy Director.
