Research: My research is focused on the study of past patterns, rates, and mechanisms of vegetation and climate change during the Quaternary (the last 2 million years). In order to accomplish this goal I am studying fossil plant and charcoal remains, the sediments in which they occur, and the spatial context in which the study sites are located. This approach allows examining past vegetation change at multiple temporal scales ranging from decades to tenths of thousands of years, with the aim of understanding current biogeographic patterns and the paleoenvironmental evolution of our study areas. We are working in northern and southern Patagonia with the objective of understanding the environmental context (climatic and non-climatic) in which the profound biological transformations associated with the last glacial-interglacial cycle have taken place. By means of comparing the similarities and differences of our results with similar geohistorical records we can establish comparisons at multiple spatial scales (regional, continental, intra and interhemispheric), and gain insights into the causes and consequences of past global changes. My main field sites at present are situated in the area of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile in thPatagonia.
