Research: From 1989 I have been involved in a long-term, large-scale experimental manipulation examining the importance of biotic interactions including vertebrate predation (raptors and foxes) on small mammals, interspecific competition between small mammals and herbivory by rodents in a north-central semiarid community in Chile. An ancillary question that emerged is what are the effects of strong periodic ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) events with exceptionally high rainfall ca. 3-7 years? Such events themselves are natural "pulse" experiments which may alter the role of biotic vs. abiotic factors in the community by triggering major intrinsic responses to high rainfall and increases in primary production. Results to date show some effects of predation and herbivory in this system, particularly during and following ENSOs. Although we have detected heterogeneous effects of rodent exclusions on the plant community in 16 plus years of work, others have noted protracted consumer effects particularly in semiarid systems where productivity is strongly correlated with precipitation and highly variable in time. We therefore need to continue our long-term studies so as to detect more subtle changes which become manifest with time. Another salient characteristic of semiarid environments is the spatial variability of soil water and nutrients. Probably, different shrub species generate patches of different environmental quality (e.g., microclimate, soil moisture, soil nutrients), providing sites suitable for different ephemeral plant assemblages. We hypothesize that the simple and/or combined effects of shrub's canopy, herbivory, and temporal variation in rainfall account for the high diversity of ephemeral plants in this system. The IV Region (in which our work has been concentrated) contains ca. 30% of the total vascular species described for Chile with a high percentage of endemic species (53%). Annual rainfall would account for temporal variation of ephemeral plant assemblages, but spatial variation of these plant assemblages would be given by the presence of different shrub species. Responses of ephemeral plants to rainfall would depend on the abundance of herbivores. Up to now, our herbivore studies have been focused on native small mammals, but in the future we are planning to study the effects of medium-sized introduced lagomorphs (rabbits and hares), in order to better understand the impact of herbivory in this system. We want to assess the relative importance of these factors using a large scale and long-term experimental approach.
