Investigación: Mis intereses de investigación están primariamente en el área de la Macroecología y en el análisis y entendimiento de la complejidad ecológica. Mi principal foco de investigación dentro de estas áreas tiene que ver con la búsqueda de aquellos principios generales que subyacen a la aparentemente infinita complejidad, diversidad y variabilidad de los sistemas ecológicos. Debido a su carácter sintético, nuestras investigaciones no se restringen a una escala temporal o especial, ni a un nivel particular de organización ecológica, abarcando fenómenos tanto a escalas ecológicas como evolutivas y desde comunidades locales, continentales hasta biotas globales. En este contexto lo que importa es la pregunta y la manera en que se aproxima en el sistema de estudio. Como en otras ramas de la ciencia, la búsqueda de principios generales e invariantes en sistemas complejos, se asocia a regularidades estadísticas tales como relaciones de escalamiento o distribuciones de probabilidad tipo ley poder en atributos ecológicos. El desafío es poder explicar sus bases mecanicistas y generar predicciones. Que permitan su puesta a prueba. Mi segundo programa de investigación tiene que ver con la ecoinformática y la biogeografía de la conservación. Mis investigaciones en esta área se centran en tratar de aplicar el conocimiento ecológico y bases de datos disponibles para apoyar la toma de decisiones en conservación y manejo. Nuestro principal objetivo es proveer de una base de conocimiento que permita una efectiva preservación de la biodiversidad de Chile por medio del uso de herramientas de planeamiento asociadas al diseño de reserves, análisis de gaps en conservación, modelamiento de nicho y análisis de patrones biogeográficos que nos permitan entender los mecanismos detrás de la generación y mantención de la biodiversidad, y el cómo será afectada por el cambio global.
