Investigación: Mis principales temas de interés son la ecología forestal y la conservación de la biodiversidad en los bosques. Junto a Mary Kalin Arroyo, a mediados de la década de 1990 mostramos que los bosques del sur de Sudamérica poseen un alto endemismo a nivel de género, y su biología reproductiva presenta muchas similitudes con la de los bosques tropicales de neblina. En el último tiempo mi laboratorio ha estado estudiando el ciclo de nutrientes y hemos mostrado que el ciclo del nitrógeno en bosques maduros del norte de la zona patagónica en Chile difiere de las predicciones teóricas basadas en la teoría de sucesiones. Estos ecosistemas forestales retienen nitrógeno inorgánico, pese a la baja contribución vía lluvia. Sin embargo se detectaron importantes pérdidas hidrológicas en forma de nitrógeno orgánico disuelto. Este resultado cuestiona la idea que en bosques maduros los ciclos de nutrientes están equilibrados. Próximamente estudiaremos la interacción entre el ciclo de nutrientes y los eventos ENOS (El Niño/Oscilación del Sur). En relación a la conservación, hemos documentado la concentración de tierras públicas protegidas en los bosques templados meridionales de lluvia, dejando sin protección las áreas de latitudes medias y costeras, biológicamente más ricas. Una estrategia conservacionista efectiva debería por tanto centrarse en el manejo de los bosques nativos remanentes en las áreas bajas y costeras ubicadas fuera de los parques. Para ello, es necesaria la interacción entre científicos y los propietarios de las tierras. En la actualidad, estamos estudiando los efectos de la fragmentación de los bosques en un ambiente manejado sobre ciertas especies, algunos aspectos del ciclo de nutrientes e interacciones tales como la polinización y dispersión de semillas.
